The literal translation of the name Cernunnos is ‘Horned One’ or ‘Antlered One’. It derives from the Proto-Celtic word ”cernu-“ meaning ‘horn’ or ‘antler,’ combined with the suffix ‘-nnos,’ indicating a divine or significant being.
Known as the god of wild things, Cernunnos was honoured in Celtic mythology, mostly in Britain. However his earliest known depictions were found at Val Camonica, in northern Italy, which was under Celtic occupation from about 400 BCE.
Cernunnos is often associated with nature, fertility, and the animal kingdom. He embodies the untamed spirit of the wilderness, representing both the life-giving and chaotic forces of the earth.
