THE MOIRAI
March 2021
Beautiful quality fine art print
from original pencil drawing.
In Ancient Greek mythology, The Moirai (also known as The Fates) ensure that all beings live out their destiny as as assigned to them by the laws of the universe. They were three: CLOTHO, the spinner of the threads of fate, LACHESIS, who measures the length of a life - and some say also decides the person's destiny, and ATROPOS, the cutter, the one who brings death. Considered to be above even the Gods in their role as enforcers of fate, they are very Old Gods, whose origins likely predate their Hellenic mythology.
Representations of them also feature in various other world mythologies and stories such as The Norns in Norse myth, and other equivalents descended from Proto-Indo-European culture. In more recent times they appeared as the three witches in Shakespeare's Macbeth.
